Congress of World Azerbaijanis

The two-day Congress of World Azerbaijanis was held at the Republican Palace last week, as 1,105 delegates, a fifth of them being women, from 28 countries, including those from France, Scotland, Iran, Germany, Austria, the US, Latvia, have taken part.
A delegation of the management board of the Congress of World Azerbaijanis was led by its chairman Javad Derekhti.
It was the Armenian-Azerbaijan conflict that the president termed the most painful problem for Azerbaijan.
Azeris have been scattered all over the world as a result of international migrations, but now they are forging active contacts. Nowadays, it is vital that Azerbaijanis living abroad maintain close relations with their historical motherland, the President indicated. Azeris should never forget their national roots, belonging and values and always try to preserve the customs and traditions of national culture.
President Aliyev stressed Azerbaijan needs an influential Diaspora, which, in addition to propagandizing Azerbaijan's foreign policy, would facilitate solutions to the country's outstanding problems. He said a special state-run body would be set up to work with this Diaspora.
Speaking at the congress were Turkish MP Arslan Ardar, President of the Azeri community in the US Tomris Azeri, delegates from Germany, the UK, France, and others. They reaffirmed Azerbaijan's being their native land and Aliyev their president and national leader. It was underscored that if the occupied lands were not recovered in a negotiated manner, other means would be resorted to. The delegates called on world Azerbaijanis to unite.
Taking the floor following the speeches of heads of 8 commissions, head of the congress commission Ali Hasanov introduced the documents bound for signing, which included a resolution of the congress, an appeal of the delegates to world Azerbaijanis, an address to President Aliyev, appeals to the world community, international organizations and heads of state and parliaments all over the world with regard to the resolution of the Armenian-Azerbaijan conflict. All the documents were then handed out among the participants.
The congress set up a new state body, the Coordination Council of World Azerbaijanis comprising 101 people and its management board of 23 members, thus completing its work.
