NEW NORWEGIAN AMBASSADOR NAMED
New Norwegian ambassador to Azerbaijan, Mr. Steinar Dill, is expected to arrive in Baku in October-November. According to a diplomatic source. The Norwegian diplomat was born in 1943 and worked as first secretary at Norwegian embassies in Poland and Russia. He led Norwegian Foreign Ministry's department for CIS countries in 1999.
NEW UN RESIDENT-COORDINATOR ARRIVES
Foreign Minister Vilayat Guliyev has received a new UN Resident-Coordinator in Azerbaijan Marco Borsotti. After congratulating the UN official on being appointed, Mr. Guliyev said he attaches a particular importance to developing cooperation with the United Nations. He then expressed a hope that UNDP would expand its activities in Azerbaijan.
Mr. Borsotti voiced his support for broader UN-Azerbaijan relations and a hope for implementation of joint programs within UNDP framework, Foreign Ministry said Tuesday
NEW BANKING LAW TO BECOME EFFECTIVE IN 2002
Work on a new version of the law "On banks and banking" is drifting to a close. The law takes into account all the banking norms stipulated by the Council of Europe, a source from the National Bank of Azerbaijan said Monday. The law is expected to become effective next year.
NBA is also working on a strategy to develop the banking sector for the time period between 2002 and 2005.
OLYMPIC CENTER FOR HORSE COMPETITIONS TO BE BUILT SHORTLY
The Ministry of Youth, Sport and Tourism is going to announce a tender for construction of an Olympic center for horse competitions in the Binagadi district of Baku. For this purpose, the process of selection of construction companies has already commenced.
Local, foreign and joint companies are encouraged to take part after paying a participation fee of AZM400,000. The bidders are required to be licensed to engage in construction work, experienced in building sporting facilities and undertaking an average yearly construction work totaling $500,000 in the past 5 years.
The deadline for submission of documents to the Ministry is October 29.
TACIS HOLDS JOURNALISTIC CONTEST
The EU Tacis program holds a contest among journalists writing on social security and pension reform in Azerbaijan. The goal is to update the population on the new pension system and social security policy, the role of citizens and state in promoting social security and the experience of other nations.
Those interested in joining the competition are to submit their articles and CVs. A winner will receive a $300 prize, while second and third prize-winners will get $200 and $100 respectively.
AZERI-AUSTRIAN RELATIONS IN FOCUS IN VIENNA
An Azeri delegation led by the deputy foreign minister Khalaf Khalafov left for Vienna on a working visit Monday. The parties are expected to hold consultations on political, economic and cultural cooperation between Azerbaijan and Austria and focus on a number of economic projects, a Foreign Ministry source said Monday.
The visit is scheduled to last till October 11.
BP, JOURNALISTIC COMMITTEE ANNOUNCE COMPETITION
BP and the Committee of Journalists' Human Rights have announced a competition for young economic journalists. The BP-funded contest is open to journalists under 30 years of age who specialize in the development of energy resources in the Azerbaijan sector of the Caspian, environmental issues, investment in the oil sector, integration into the world economy, etc.
A BP source said Wednesday that cash awards have been allotted for the contest, ranging from $700 for the winner to $300 for the third place. Winners will be awarded on December 31, the Day of Solidarity of World Azeris.
