Baku calls for compliance with UN SC resolutions

While US ambassador holds PR exercise over Iraq
Azerbaijan has called for Iraq to comply with all UN Security Council resolutions.
"We proceed from the belief that Iraqi authorities will cooperate on a full scale with the international weapons inspectors on the basis of the report by the US secretary of state to the UN Security Council," a Monday statement by Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Vilayat Quliyev said.
"Azerbaijan supports US efforts aimed at the destruction of weapons of mass destruction and speedy settlement of the crisis in accordance with the UN Charter," the statement says.
In the meantime, the US ambassador to Azerbaijan Ross Wilson held a PR exercise in Baku, restating America’s position over Iraq.
Ambassador Wilson told a meeting with students at the Khazar University on Thursday that "the threat of war will remain imminent while Iraq continues to ignore UN Security Council resolutions and fails to disarm".
Clarifying his country's position on the Iraqi crisis, the US ambassador reaffirmed  that the US has evidence of chemical, biological and nuclear weapons produced by Iraq. He claimed the US with its anti-Iraq alliance is determined to make all necessary efforts for self-defense and Iraqi disarmament. The ambassador did not rule out that possible action against Iraq might be avoided if Saddam Hussein resigned.
Answering questions from students, Ross Wilson dismissed suggestions that Iraqi oil was the major factor for war.
In response to a question asking why the US is resorting to force, while urging Azerbaijan to settle the Upper Qarabag conflict through negotiation, the ambassador said the Azerbaijani nation itself should decide whatever steps it would take in the future.
Mr. Wilson stressed that his country had provided assistance totaling $4-5m to Qarabag since 1998 but this sum was not significant as the US rendered this sort of assistance to many countries.
