German church re-opens in Azeri northwestern region

A German church was re-opened after rehabilitation in Azerbaijan’s northwestern Khanlar District on Wednesday.

The Lutheran Church, which was built in 1854, was overhauled by the German Technical Cooperation Society (GTZ). German Ambassador to Azerbaijan Per Stankina, head of the district executive power Arif Seyidov and GTZ representatives as well as MPs and others attended the event.

Addressing the ceremony, Ambassador Stankina assessed the rehabilitation of the church as a sign of cooperation between the two countries. He said that such a tradition would be further continued. The diplomat didn’t rule out other German churches would be renovated as well.

Stankina said that the days of German culture would be held in Azerbaijan in 2009. Events with the participation of German arts figures will be organized in several districts of Azerbaijan for the purpose.*
