European court upholds Azeri media watchdog’s suit

The European Court of Human Rights has issued another ruling on Azerbaijan, upholding a plea filed by the head of a local media watchdog.

The chairperson of the Center for Journalistic Research, Sheida Nasibova, claimed that the Azerbaijani Ministry of Justice had refused to register the organization that was set up in 2001 with a view to developing journalism and ensure freedom of media in the country.

The European court ruled that the government is committed to pay 1,000 euros to the plaintiff in compensation for the damage inflicted and 2,000 euros in litigation expenses.

This is the sixth ruling issued by the European court on Azerbaijan.*
