Romania To Mark Unification

On December 1, Romania will mark its national holiday, the Day of Unification of all Romanians. It was to this occasion that the news conference at the Romanian embassy in Azerbaijan was dedicated to on Wednesday. Romanian ambassador Tasin Camil voiced his sympathy with the families of those killed during a recent earthquake in Azerbaijan.
He then told journalists of the history of Romania, centuries-long struggle of the Romanian people for unification and statehood. The diplomat spoke of the economic and political situation in his country, saying that Romania, just like Azerbaijan, has been producing oil for over a century and possesses advanced technologies.
There are over 20 refineries in Romania and a large oil terminal in Constanza, he said. The latter is also the biggest port in Europe. Therefore, Romania is interested in strengthening ties with Azerbaijan and Caspian countries. At the same time, the ambassador indicated that bilateral relations in non-oil sectors are rather weak. Despite numerous appeals of the Romanian embassy and businessmen to the Azerbaijan government, Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the things aren't moving off the ground.
Mr. Tasin then touched upon the parliamentary and presidential elections currently underway in Romania.
Run off
Results of presidential and parliamentary elections in Romania of October 26 will become known after the second round scheduled for December 10, according to ambassador Tasin Camil.
He said 98% of parliamentary election results were available Wednesday. Of political parties, the front-runner is the Social Democratic Party (SDP) with 36-37% of votes, then come the Big Romanian Party (BRP) - 20-21%, then three parties with 7-8% each, while the rest failed to surmount the 5% requirement. According to the ambassador, SDP is almost twice ahead of BRP, whose being second in the race has been surprising for many as its leader is frequently compared to the flamboyant Russian politician Zhirinovski.
The presidential race is topped by the SDP leader Ion Iliescu (37%). Then comes the BRP leader Corneliu Vadim Tudor.
Asked about the reason for non-participation of the head of state Emil Constantinescu in the presidential election, the ambassador said he had refused to run for personal motives.
In response to a question about the Garabagh problem, the ambassador said Romania had always contributed to the solution of conflicts in the Caucasus, the Upper Garabagh in particular.
"Next year, when Romania will assume rotating presidency in the OSCE, this work will be continued and we believe that peace and stability will finally be established in the region", the diplomat said.
National holiday marked
Romanian embassy hosted a reception at the Europe Hotel Friday, dedicated to the national holiday - day of unification of Romanians.
