JAPANESE ROAD BUILDING MACHINERY PRESENTED
20 pieces of road construction machinery by Japanese Katahira, Mitsubishi and Itochu were presented near Bilajari settlement of Baku. The machinery was delivered to Baku following agreement between the Azeravtoyol state concern and the Japanese government, which has allotted JPY372 million worth of grants for the purchase of the machinery, Azeravtoyol official Azad Azadaliyev said Thursday.
The presentation was attended by vice-premier Abid Sharifov, Japanese diplomats and Azeravtoyol executives.

GERMAN GOV'T TO HELP FIGHT POVERTY IN AZERBAIJAN

The German government supports the development and preparation of a poverty eradication strategy in Azerbaijan, the German embassy in Baku quoted Claus Grevlik as saying in a press release Thursday.
The German government attaches a special attention to the development and preparation of the strategy to fight poverty in Azerbaijan, the press release reads. The federal government of Germany has decided to allocate 190,000 Euro to coordinate governmental working groups and to devise a general program. The secretariat of the program housed in the Azeri Ministry of Economic Development will be financed using these funds for 18 months.
18 months is a period enough to devise the program, the document says.
Ambassador Grevlik thinks that the assistance of international donors will be useful if Azerbaijan use its resources consecutively.

ENERGY EXCHANGE SUSPENDED BETWEEN AZERBAIJAN, GEORGIA

Azerbaijan and Georgia are no longer exchanging energy supplies, as power is transmitted in extreme cases on the request of either party, press service of the AzerEnergy joint stock company said Tuesday.
Power was last transmitted to Georgia in January of 2001 following the accident in the Tbilisi Regional Power Plant, which is among Georgia's largest power station.
Bilateral power transmissions were held in previous years too, as 3.272 million and 16.899 million kilo Watt/hours of energy was exported to Georgia in 2001 and 2000 respectively.

AZERBAIJAN, UKRAINE SIGN CO-OP DEALS
The fourth meeting of the Azerbaijan-Ukrainian intergovernmental commission on economic cooperation in Kiev signed 6 agreements on mechanical engineering, transport, finance, taxes, copyright, and a protocol on the outcomes of the gathering. Chairing the meeting were first vice-premier Abbas Abbasov of Azerbaijan and vice-premier Oleg Dubina of the Ukraine.
The meeting focused on expanding the Ukraine's participation in the development and transportation of Caspian energy resources and bilateral commercial ties.

POTATOES ON DUTCH TECHNOLOGY
A scientific technical seminar on application of the "Development of potato seeding" project in Absheron Peninsula was held at the Scientific Research Institute of Vegetable Growing Saturday. Addressing the seminar, minister for agriculture Irshad Aliyev said that the project being implemented jointly with the Dutch government in Tovuz Baltiya Ltd. in Tovuz would be introduced in Absheron too.
A plot of 30 hectares was allocated in Tovuz following the agreement between Tovuz Baltiya and the Institute. Highly productive potato seeds have been delivered there and cultivation will use mechanical Dutch technology.
Participants in the seminar stressed the need for selecting potato sorts for Absheron and studying agricultural machinery and other parameters necessary for the project.

GERMAN BANK SET TO CONTINUE CO-OP
President of AzerEnergy joint stock company Etibar Pirverdiyev met with top representative of German Bayernische Landendsbank Girozcentrale Peter Trepte Friday. The bank loaned the reconstruction project of Baku's heating power station in 1999, the commissioning of which added 100 mega Watts of capacity to Azerbaijan's power grid.
Mr. Trepte voiced satisfaction with the bank's contacts with AzerEnergy, reaffirming readiness to further finance projects in Azerbaijan. He said the Azerbaijan government was timely repaying its loans and therefore the German State Insurance Company Germes had elevated the country's rating as a solvent and reliable partner. This has opened up new and broad horizons for Azerbaijan, as expenses concerning allocation of loans will be considerably paired down, AzerEnergy said Friday.

AZERI ENTREPRENEURS TO CO-OP WITH FRENCH BUSINESSMEN
A meeting with chairman of the Azeri-French Chamber of Commerce Michelle Dulla is due at the National Confederation of Entrepreneurship Organizations of Azerbaijan Wednesday. It is expected to center on the situation in the private sector in Azerbaijan and possibilities of forging business relations between local entrepreneurs and French businessmen.
An agreement on cooperation will be signed after the meeting, the Confederation said Saturday.
