Armenia believed to possess mass destruction weapons

Chief of the General Staff of the Turkish Armed Forces General Hussein Kivrikoglu has made a shocking statement, saying that Armenia has weapons of mass destruction. The Turkish General said this is included in the list of "six dangers" for Turkey, Turkish media have reported.

The Turkish General thinks it necessary to impose sanctions on Armenia.

Gen. Kivrikoglu aired Turkey's negative attitude to US bombings of Iraq, underscoring that not just the Saddam regime, but also countries like Syria, Iran and Armenia possess weaponry for mass destruction. The Turkish army chief said the sanctions that are in place for Iraq should be equally applicable for Armenia.

Theoretically, nuclear researches are on a very high level in Armenia, according to political analyst Gabil Husseinli. "We have information that Armenia has stolen some nuclear-important data from Russia, a country it operates its atomic energy plant with. Odds run high that nuclear weapons are stored in Armenia, since there are Russia's military bases in that country", he said.

G. Husseinli regards the statements of the Turkish military official as a serious warning. "Turkey is a super power in the region and Pakistan and other Arabic countries may eventually support the official Ankara", the political analyst said, adding that the US wouldn't carry on bombing Iraq without Turkey's consent.

It should be noted that the US defense secretary William Cohen and his Armenian counterpart Serj Sarkisyan signed an agreement on joint action for non-proliferation of mass destruction weapons in Washington on July 24, 2000. The US has allocated $300,000 to Armenia for personnel training and necessary equipment.

Then, the Pentagon hoped the agreement “would help Armenia’s customs and borderline services improve in a move to halt smuggling in Armenia and to prevent proliferation of mass destruction arms including chemical and biological weaponry”.
