NEW UN RESIDENT COORDINATOR ARRIVES IN AZERBAIJAN

In August 2001, the United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan appointed Mr. Marco Borsotti as the next Resident-Coordinator and UN Development Program (UNDP) Resident Representative in the Azerbaijan Republic.

On 16 September 2001, Mr. Borsotti arrived in Azerbaijan and in the nearest time is expected to present his credentials to the Azerbaijani Government.

Mr. Borsotti holds a Master's degree in Political Science from Turin University. In his previous assignments Mr. Borsotti served in the United States (New York), Zimbabwe, Zambia, Somalia, Mozambique, Brazil, and his last post before coming to Azerbaijan was the UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative in Georgia.

Mr. Borsotti brings to Baku his rich experience in working closely with Bretton Wood Institutions (the World Bank and IMF) to address the poverty problem, especially within the IDP communities.

CIS PRESIDENTIAL MEETING VENUE SHIFTED

Russian President Putin suggested in a telephone conversation with Azeri President Aliyev that the meeting of CIS Presidents scheduled for September 26 be shifted from Ashgabat to Moscow viewing the situation after the recent US terror attacks. Accepting the proposal, the Azeri President agreed that it would be reasonable to meet in Moscow.

As reported earlier, the two presidents turned on ways of a negotiated solution to the Garabagh conflict. Stressing the necessity of keeping on with the Aliyev-Kocharian dialogue, President Putin said that Russia would accept any agreement that could be reached between Azerbaijan and Armenia. Russia is genuinely interested in peace and order in the Caucasus, as this is the key precondition for the Caucasus Four to operate effectively, the Russian leader said.

WHO TO PROVIDE 80 IDPs WITH MEDICINES

The Open Friendship Society of Azeri and British Youth has conducted a medical examination of IDPs settled in dormitories in Darnagul settlement of Baku. As the examination unfolds, IDP women predominantly suffer from blood pressure fluctuations and genealogical diseases, while children are martyrs to mumps, co-chairman of the Society Ruslan Farzaliyev told AssA-Irada Monday.

According to him, the World Health Organization has undertaken to provide 80 IDPs with medicinal preparations.
