RELIGIOUS COMMUNITIES TO UNDERGO RE-REGISTRATION
There are over 400 religious communities registered in Azerbaijan, including 350 Islamic ones. In an interview with Azernews, chairman of the State Committee on Religious Affairs Rafiq Aliyev shed some light on the ongoing debate concerning re-registration of the communities and abolition of some of them. He said, "Azerbaijan did not have an entity regulating relations between the state and religion, but now, as such a body has been set up, all religious entities are to undergo re-registration. By-laws of some of them conflict with our legislation and must be amended. There are some communities that have no historic roots in Azerbaijan, such as the International Krishna Society and the Nehemiia religious community based in the US.
Concerning the religious propaganda on part of some humanitarian organizations registered in Azerbaijan, Prof. Aliyev said this was a part of such organizations’ work, but it is necessary that the Ministry of Justice demand them to erase such provisions from their by-laws.
«Let them help the poor instead of taking advantage of their plight and coercing them to adopt other religious for a piece of bread», he said.
