NETHERLANDS READY TO DEFEND AZERBAIJAN's CAUSE
Foreign minister Vilayat Guliyev received the permanent representative of the Kingdom of Netherlands to the Council of Europe, member of the "Ago" monitoring group, ambassador Hendrikh Vagenmeikers Friday, according to the Foreign Ministry.
Mr. Vangenmeikers said the Dutch government hails Azerbaijan's admission to the COE, as well as the fact that the republic undertook a number of commitments in the organization.
Commending the steps Azerbaijan is taking to live up to its commitments, the ambassador said his country is ready to defend Azerbaijan's fair cause. He also condemned Armenia's disregard for Azerbaijan's territorial integrity.
Min. Guliyev voiced his appreciation to the diplomat for having established close contact with Azerbaijan's permanent representation in Strasbourg. Pointing out to the immense cooperation opportunities, Min. Guliyev said Azerbaijan is interested in expanded investment inflow from Netherlands.
UN CONVENES ILLEGAL GUN TRAFFICKING CONFERENCE
A conference on illegal trafficking of firearms will be held at the UN New York headquarters from July 9 till 20, the UN Baku office said in a statement Friday.
The UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, taking into consideration the extremely high number of victims of firearms, has termed them as 'weapons of mass destruction'.
Despite this, unlike chemical, biological and nuclear weapons, there is still no regime of non-proliferation of firearms that could prevent them from spreading worldwide.
The conference objectives were discussed by the Preparatory Committee established by the UN General Assembly in December 1999.
DEFENSE ATTORNEYS APPEAL TO JUDGES
The Society of the Garabagh Disabled has appealed to prosecutors and judges to forget about the crackdown on part of the authorities and to deliver a fair ruling over the arrested handicapped, the Society said in a statement Monday.
The statement says the authorities have a hand in the trial and even casts a shadow on presidential chief-of-staff Ramiz Mehdiyev.
In January and February, members of the Society conducted hunger strikes demanding to raise their pensions and allowances. Then the handicapped took to streets for a massive march, which ended in clashes with police and subsequent arrests of some of the disabled. The trial started in mid-June, but then was adjourned till July 10.
FORMER INTERIOR TROOPERS' RIGHTS INFRINGED UPON
135 former interior troopers are still incarcerated and live in deplorable conditions, Famil Suleymanov, head of the human rights group of the former interior troops, told a news conference at the Resource and Training Center Friday.
According to him, those released from prison continue to be persecuted and are denied their passports. For example, Rasim Agayev's attempts to receive his passport have remained futile for 7 months. Around 50 complaints addressed to the Minister for Interior are currently at the MIA, which claims, however, that they have been burnt, F. Suleymanov said.
"WESTERN AZERBAIJAN" INT'L SOCIETY BEING SET UP
The organizing committee of the "Western Azerbaijan" international society has released a statement saying that preparations for the society's constituent conference are drawing to a close and 10,000 people would like to join it.
The society's key objective is to maintain close contact with those deported from western Azerbaijan (current Armenia) and other regions of Azerbaijan. Subdivisions of the organizations are being set up abroad.
COE MONITORING GROUP MEETS WITH OPPOSITION
A COE monitoring group led by Petro Ago met with leaders of political parties and human right groups of Azerbaijan at Italian embassy Thursday, as the parties focused on the status of human rights in the country and Azerbaijan's commitments taken at the COE, ADP told Azernews Thursday.
The ADP secretary general Sardar Jalaloglu told the meeting that the authorities are not in the intention of fulfilling the commitments undertaken and it was time to hold an international trial of the genocide of the authorities against the people. He proposed that COE take resolute measures in this regard.
Members of the group promised to inform President Aliyev of the issues raised.
EGYPT's AMBASSADOR STOPS AT PFPA
Egyptian ambassador to Azerbaijan Jihan Amin Muhammad Ali visited the temporary office of the PFPA to meet with its chairman Ali Karimov Thursday, as the parties focused on issues of expanding Azeri-Egyptian relations, Armenian occupation of Azeri territories and democratic progress in Azerbaijan, the party said in a statement Thursday.
EMERGENCIES CONFERENCE DUE IN BAKU
An international science conference, "Human being and catastrophes at the dawn of the third millennium", is due in Baku on September 17-18, Habib Ojagov, President of the "Fovgal" Association for Emergencies and Life Safety, told Azernews Monday.
The conference is expected to focus on safety of the population and territories in natural calamities, as well as necessary training, ecological problems, economic and psychological security, etc.
350 participants are expected to attend, with over 170 presentations from more than 300 authors already received. All the presentations will be printed and handed out among attendees.
Organizers of the conference are "Fovgal", the Ministry of Education, the Geography Institute under the Academy of sciences, the University of Architecture and Construction Engineering, the Caucasus University, and the scientific and technical complex "Intergeotetis".
The first such conference was held in Baku on November 20-22 last year.
