AZERI FOREIGN MINISTER IN JAPAN
An Azeri delegation led by foreign minister Vilayat Guliyev left for Japan on a working visit Sunday. The delegation is expected to take part in an exhibition of South Caucasus goods in Tokio, a source from the MFA told Azernews Monday. Min. Guliyev is scheduled to meet with Japanese officials.

INFORMAL CIS SUMMIT BEING PREPARED
An informal meeting of CIS presidents is scheduled in Sochi for August 1-3, as the heads of state are expected to focus on opportunities of expanding multisided cooperation within the Commonwealth, according to a diplomatic source.
The presidents will also discuss the functions of a free trade zone and collaboration in combating international terrorism and drug trafficking.

BULGARIAN SPEAKER ELECTED AS BSECO CHAIRMAN
The 17th plenary meeting of the Black Sea Economic Cooperation Organization (BSECO) completed in Baku Thursday, after it focused on issues of expanding cultural, social and educational cooperation and heard a report on the Organization's budget for 2000.
The participants of the meeting elected the BSECO chairman, his three deputies and a treasurer, as chairman of the Bulgarian National Assembly Iordan Sokolov was chosen to preside over the Organization. He replaced the speaker of the Azerbaijan Parliament Murtuz Alasgarov in this post.

BAKU HOSTING AZERBAIJAN-EU CO-OP COMMITTEE MEETING
A meeting of the Azerbaijan-EU cooperation committee is underway in Baku, as the parties are focusing on opportunities of expanding bilateral political and economic relations and implementation of EU-funded economic projects in Azerbaijan.
Standing for the EU at the meeting is director of its Caucasus and Central Asia department Timo Sumo, special EU representative for Azerbaijan, ambassador Renato Batti and other executives, while Azerbaijan is represented by vice-premier Abid Sharifov and deputy foreign ministers Mahmud Mammadguliyev and Araz Azimov.

FIRST WELL ON GARABAGHLI VINDICATES FORECAST
The drilling of the first exploration well on the "Kursangi-Garabaghli" field completed last week, a source from the Salyan Oil operating company told Azernews Monday. According to the source, the drilling has been finalized as vindicating the forecast.
"The company remains content with the results of the drilling on Garabaghli", says Salyan Oil manager Tariyel Yolchuyev. "We plan to start drilling the second exploration well on the field in August", he added.
SOCAR has a 50%-stake in the PSA of "Kursangi-Garabaghli", while Frontera Resources possesses 30% and Delta Hess - 20%.

DEVON ENERGY MULLS SHARE IN BTC CONSTRUCTION
Devon Energy does not intend to sell its shares in the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan MEP, on the contrary it aspires to hike its stake in the Group of the BTC Sponsors, a source from the company's Baku office told AssA-Irada Monday.
Buying into Ramco's shares in the Contract of the Century, Devon Energy earlier received a 0.6% stake in the pipeline project. However, the company was not engaged in preliminary engineering work and its share was financed by other companies with a total of $26 million spent. Of this amount, $126,000 was Devon's share, and the company intends to be involved in the basic engineering of the Baku-Ceyhan pipeline. Yet, it is not ruled out that it will join the BTC construction to get a share in the Group of the BTC Sponsors.

ONLY ONE SCHOOL BUILT IN 10 YEARS
According to the minister for education Misir Mardanov, only one school has been built in Baku over the past ten years. In 1988, there were 256,000 schoolchildren, while now they amount to 366,000. There is a need for new schools, but even a site for their construction is not provided, the minister said.
M. Mardanov recalled destruction of over 100 schools in the Armenia-occupied lands of Azerbaijan.
