UNDP, AZERI CUSTOMS SIGN SECOND PHASE OF JOINT PROJECT
The Azerbaijan State Customs Committee has hosted a ceremony of signing Phase 2 of the joint project with UNDP on "Capacity building and data network implementation for the State Customs Committee of the Azerbaijan Republic".
UNDP and Azeri Government launched the above project in January 1999. Since then, assistance has been provided to the Committee in terms of personnel training, sharing practical experience and procurement of up-to-date network telecommunication equipment. A process of creation of the first in the country Wide Area Network connecting the central Customs administration and the regional customs units has started and developed successfully. The project helped the Committee better manage trade operations data collection and data research and improve revenue collection.
The second phase of the project envisages completion of the wide-area network creation, international training programs, the establishment of automated systems for clearance and control, which will simplify process of clearance.
The project document was signed by the chairman of the State Customs Committee Mr. Heydarov and UNDP Resident Representative Mr. Ercan Murat.
LOCAL SPECIALISTS TO STUDY EASTERN ASIA EXPERIENCE
Transitional peculiarities in Caucasus and Central Asian nations were high on agenda in Baku Saturday in an international conference, "Economic development in Azerbaijan: targets and prospects".
The conference was organized with financial assistance from Japan's "Sosakala" foundation as part of the "Introduction of market economy in Central Asian and Caucasus nations: Eastern Asia's experience" project.
The conference was attended by professor of Harvard University Boris Roomer, professor of Moscow Institute of world economy and international relations Stanislav Zhukov, a spokesman for Asian Development Bank Rajiv Kumar, specialists from the Association and representatives of political parties.
Prof. Zhukov made a presentation on "Macroeconomic situation in Azerbaijan in the first post-Soviet decade". Local specialists will study the experience of Eastern Asia and discuss ways of introducing it in Azerbaijan.
