PRESIDENT CONGRATULATES
"Bakili Oglanlar"
Receiving the “Bakili Oglanlar” team of the quick-witted, President Aliyev said it was a landmark event for the country and its youth.
During this year's last session of the Milli Mejlis, MPs congratulated the captain of the "Bakili Oglanlar" team of the quick-witted club, MP Anar Mammadkhanov on the occasion of the team's "Champion of the 20th century" title won in Moscow.
WORLD AZERIS ON NEW MILLENNIUM's EVE

The Islamic Re-search Center "Irshad", the International Center of Azeri Youth and the "Birlik" Caucasus Youth Center held a joint musical and literary meeting Friday, "World Azeris on the new millennium's eve", at the “Irshad” hotel of Baku.
There are some 47,771,000 Azeris living in nearly 70 countries of the world, including over 30 million in Iran, 4 million in Europe and CIS each, 2.5 million in Turkey, 1 million in the USA, Iraq, etc. The future of a sovereign Azerbaijan will, to a great extent, depend on how unified world Azeris are. The meeting is intended to assist government and non-governmental organizations in solving the problem.
One homeland
All Azeris of the world have one motherland - the independent and free Azerbaijan Republic, general director of the Islamic Research Center "Irshad" Dr. Prof. Rafiq Aliyev told the meeting attended by representatives of the government and NGOs.
“The Azerbaijan Republic is the only motherland for 40 million Azerbaijanis of the world. It is for this reason that the three-color national flag and the national anthem adopted in 1918 are equally dear for all Azeris on the globe”, he said.
The key objective of the meeting was to mark the Day of Solidarity of World Azeris and wake up the government to the problem of unity and solidarity of Azeris.
RETIRED OFFICERS PREPARE PATRIOTIC WAR PLAN
Chairman of the Union of retired officers Isa Sadikhov told a news conference at the Press Club Saturday that the Union had prepared a patriotic war plan for the liberation of Armenia-occupied Azeri lands.
"We are ready to forward the model to the government at any time", he said. Mr. Sadikhov then blamed the government for taking a defeatist position, saying Azerbaijan was quite capable of liberating its territories.
Former defense minister General Dadash Rzayev said he was pleased with the current plight of the army and defense minister Safar Abiyev can successfully manage it.
STANDSTILL ENTERPRISES TO EXECUTE MILITARY ORDERS
The Milli Mejlis has instructed its commissions to prepare a draft law "On military industry", deputy economics minister Oqtay Haqverdiyev told AssA-Irada Tuesday.
According to him, the decision has been prompted by a need for legal framework for the military industry development, which would enable state-owned enterprises to fulfil orders for the military industry. Besides, it will contribute to the solution of unemployment problems, O. Haqverdiyev said.
AZERCELL CONDUCTS CHRISTMAS FESTIVITIES FOR CHILDREN
"Azercell" has organized a New Year celebration for children at the Baku Entertainment Center, featuring circus actors, clowns, jugglers, etc. The Santa Claus and the Snow Maiden congratulated kids and presented them with gifts from "Azercell".
NEW YEAR SURPRISE FOR ORPHANS
The Europe Hotel of Baku, in cooperation with the International Women's Club, has hosted a charity New Year celebration for the inhabitants of 6 orphanages of Baku. Participating in the festivities were magicians and clowns, while in conclusion all the kids were presented with gifts.
According to directors of the orphanages, such foreign companies as Statoil, bp, AIOC, Imair, British Airways, Turkish companies, the Crescent Beach hotel have been regularly providing assistance to the orphans.
EXXON HELPS CHILDREN DEPRIVED OF PARENTS' CARE
Exxon Azerbaijan Operating Company LLC (Exxon Azerbaijan) announced that it sponsored the celebration of New Year in "Asylum House" of the Umid Yeri humanitarian organization for children deprived of parents' care. The New Year celebration consists of a show program with Santa Claus, a snow-maiden, clowns and presents. In addition, Exxon Azerbaijan donated to children at Umid Yeri sets of a five-volume Children's Encyclopedia, published with Exxon Azerbaijan financial assistance, and Math books.
"Asylum House" is the only one of its kind in Azerbaijan and takes care of children deprived of parents' care.
19 APARTMENT BUILDINGS RESTORED
As of December 30, 2000, 19 earthquake-damaged apartment buildings in Baku and Sumgayit had been restored. In addition, money has been transferred to those on the countryside whose houses have either been badly damaged or completely ruined (111 and 5 respectively).
The process of inspection of damaged buildings in Baku and Sumgayit is underway: 9,429 buildings have been examined, 539 found in an emergency condition, including 452 residential. 3,156 people have been evacuated, according to the ad hoc state commission.
According to the seismological center under the Academy of Sciences, several weak tremors were registered on January 1. Only one person is still undergoing treatment in hospital.
