PRESIDENT WISHES WELL TO CAUCASUS HIGHLAND JEWS
Highland Jews are one of the Caucasus peoples playing an important role in the historical and cultural life of the region, says President Aliyev in his address to the international scientific symposium "Highland Jews of the Caucasus" underway in Baku. The President described the symposium as an important event on the country's socio-political scene. He voiced his confidence that the discussion would duly contribute to further rapprochement of nations and that such meetings will become traditional.
FOREIGN MINISTER PLEADS FOR MIDDLE EAST PEACE
Foreign Ministry of Azerbaijan released a statement last week expressing concerns with clashes in the Middle East that have resulted in heavy human loss. The statement says Azerbaijan considers it inconceivable to try to resolve the conflict through the use of arms and calls upon parties to the conflict to sit down at the negotiating table.
NEXT OSCE CHAIRMAN TO VISIT AZERBAIJAN
Jaime Gama, foreign minister of Portugal, the country expected to assume rotating presidency in the OSCE in 2002, will pay a visit to Azerbaijan, Armenia and Georgia in July, according to a diplomatic source.
The Portuguese minister is expected to become familiar with the situation in the region and the mentioned countries, meet with government officials and leaders of political parties.
IOM REGIONAL DIRECTOR EXPECTED IN BAKU
Regional director for CIS of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) Mr. Andris Gladbach is expected to arrive in Baku Tuesday. The purpose of the visit is to become familiar with the country and programs IOM is implementing in Azerbaijan, according to an IOM representative in Azerbaijan Ioost van der Aalst.
In a meeting with Foreign Minister Vilayat Guliyev Monday, Mr. van der Aalst touched upon problems of post-conflict periods, saying a program of emergency restoration operations could be prepared in cooperation with the Organization after Azerbaijan and Armenia sign a peace treaty.
MOD AWARDS JOURNALISTS
Defense Minister Colonel-General Safar Abiyev has awarded 4 journalists with diplomas for what he described as comprehensive coverage of the situation in the Armed Forces, its achievements and role in educating youngsters in the patriotic spirit. MOD spokesman Colonel Ramiz Malikov handed the awards to journalists Wednesday at the Hazi Aslanov Central House of Officers.
SPACE AGENCY DIRECTOR ADDRESSES INT'L CONFERENCE
Director of the Azerbaijan National Space Agency (ANSA) Arif Mehdiyev, in his speech at the UN-organized international conference "Peaceful use of the outer space" in Moscow, spoke of the work carried out by Azeri specialists over the last 10 years. The report was dedicated to the land study from space.
The conference was attended by 500 specialists from 93 countries and devoted to the peaceful use and protection of outer space, its impact on earth, philosophical perception of outer space, etc.
YAP TO MOVE TO NEW OFFICES
The Yeni Azerbaijan Party (YAP) is expected to move to new offices on the occasion of the President's upcoming birthday, with renovation work of the new premises drawing to a close, the party's spokesman Hussein Pashayev told Azernews Monday.
According to him, the top-class renovation has been carried out using the party's membership fees. However, he declined to spell out the exact amount spent.
Touching upon the current office, H. Pashayev said it would not be passed on to another party, as it is registered in the Party's name.
HASHISH TRAFFICKING THWARTED
The Astara customs service, in cooperation with the local Drug Enforcement Department of the MIA, have detained a native of Astara province Fariz Mammadov in an attempt to sell one kilo of hashish at $1,300.
A criminal case has been stared, the customs committee told Azernews Monday.
RAILWAY NOT TO REPORT TO TRANSPORT MINISTRY
The Railway Office of Azerbaijan is controlled by the state, therefore, it will not report to the Ministry of Transport being established, according to the president of "AzerAuto-Nagliyyat" state concern Hussein Husseinov.
He said such major transport giants as "AzAL", "Caspian Shipping Company" and "AzerAutoYol" would become departments within the new ministry, which will be in charge of the government's transport policy. Asked when the ministry would see life, Mr. Husseinov said an exact date was not known yet.
