GUUAM SUMMIT PROPOSED IN MAY
Foreign minister Vilayat Guliyev told journalists Tuesday that Azerbaijan has suggested that a GUUAM summit be held in May due to the busy schedule of President Aliyev. The summit is due in Kiev as planned.
Asked whether Moldova will remain in GUUAM after a victory of communists there, Min. Guliyev said it would not if it decides to join the Russia-Belorussia commonwealth.
BY-LAWS OF HALF OF MUNICIPAL COUNCILS REGISTERED
The Ministry of Justice has registered the by-laws of some 2.500 municipal councils to date. According to a source from the Ministry, registration of by-laws enables municipalities to work independently. Without registering their by-laws, some of them are unable to work effectively and depend on executive bodies.
AZERBAIJAN TO ATTEND DISCUSSION ON CHILDREN PROBLEMS
In preparation for the UN General Assembly session in New York, regional consultations will be held in Bucharest in early April.
According to the head of the Azerbaijan Center "Woman and development" Mrs. Elmira Suleymanova, the participants will focus on problems of children's rights in Europe. Azerbaijan will be represented by three organizations - Children's Organization, Youth Union and the Center.
ILO STANDARDS TO BE DISCUSSED IN KISHINEV
An international conference "Labor safety and hygiene in agriculture" is due in Kishinev on April 9-10. The conference will be organized on the initiative of the regional trade union of Central and Eastern Europe.
A source from the Azerbaijan confederation of trade unions told Azernews Monday that the conference would focus on new International Labor Organization (ILO) safety standards in agriculture. Trade unions from CIS, Hungary and Romania are expected to take part.
POPULATION GROWING
As of early March 2001, the population of Azerbaijan made up 8,092,000 people, 0.14% over end of 2000 results.
Birth rate per 1,000 people and natural growth have declined from 18.5 to 16.6 and 10.9 to 9.1 respectively.
900 people entered Azerbaijan for permanent residence while 1,300 left the country for good.
The number of marriages per 1,000 people has risen from 4.5 to 4.7.
LIFE SAFETY TO BE DISCUSSED AT SEMINAR
A seminar on "Radiation safety on the territory of Azerbaijan and elimination of reasons causing it" will be held in Baku in late April.
The seminar will focus on measures against environment pollution with associated gas produced together with oil, according to the president of the association of specialists in emergencies and life safety Habib Ojagov.
The association also intends to hold an international science conference in Baku to be dedicated to protection of the population and territories in technogenic and natural emergencies. The conference, tentatively scheduled for September 17-19, will be attended by specialists from 15 countries.
Mr. Ojagov added that a draft law on protection of the population and territories from emergencies is currently in preparation.
NEW STAMPS TO BE PRINTED IN FRANCE
The "AzerStamp" company under the Ministry of Communication is expected to print stamps on ecology shortly, president of the company Intigam Bashir told AssA-Irada Tuesday.
Also on agenda is printing of stamps dedicated to the 10th anniversary of Azerbaijan's independence, the 800th birthday anniversary of a renowned Azeri scholar Tusi, Azerbaijan's admission to the COE and Caspian ecology.
All stamps will be printed in France in 30,000 to 1 million copies.
