Over 10 bln cubic meters of urban waste released into Caspian

A two-day seminar, "Trans-diagnostic analysis" was held at the State Committee on ecology Wednesday. As part of the Caspian Ecological Program, the seminar targets identifying priority factors, which adversely tell on the Caspian.
According to the coordinator of the CEP Baku Center Latifa Husseinova, the key contaminants of the Caspian are the Kura river and urban wastes. She said that each year over 10 billion cubic meters of urban waste and 51,000 tons of hazardous substances are released into the Caspian Sea. The pollution comes from not only the littoral states, but also the countries, like Turkey and Armenia, which Caspian basin rivers traverse.
Also polluting the Sea is industrial and agricultural wastes.
Of 29 species of the Caspian fish, 11 has been already included into the Red Data Book. Other species are feared to have the same lot shortly. Fishing enterprises are unable of functioning on a normal basis. It is also deplorable that the major fishing area, the Caspian-Kura basin, which previously produced 60% of the Caspian fish, is one of the most contaminated areas.*
