Saving seals in focus

A two-day workshop as part of the Ecotox project is expected to take place in Baku in late March to explore ways to save seals in the Caspian, according to a competent source. The workshop is held on the outcomes of the first phase of the project, which is expected to run for two years and a half.

Experts calculate that up to 3,000 dead seals were flown to the Azeri shores of the Caspian in 2000. Now, seals are not normally seen in the Azeri coasts of the Sea. President of the Society for Protection of Animals Azer Garayev explained the disappearance with considerable water contamination and stress seals have experienced.

Ecolex is being implemented by the World Bank with financing from the Japanese Trust Fund.*
