First fence around water-reservoir under construction
In an effort to safeguard the Jeyranbatan water reservoir, which supplies half of Baku, Sumgayit and Absheron peninsula water, the first sanitary zone fence is currently under construction. According to the director of the Agency for Reconstruction and Rehabilitation Mr. Ali Mammadov, $218,000 of the EU grant totaling $950,000 have already been spent.
The reinforced concrete is 24-km long. The project, developed by the state committee for melioration and water economy, also envisions expansion of the first sanitary zone fence, restoration of plantations and vegetation on an area of 170 hectares, renewal of warning signs and buoys and evacuation of families settled in the locality.
The project will enable a better control over the strict-regime zone and quality of potable water. The project is scheduled to complete in May 2001.
