 | Academician assassination trial starts |
The Grave Crimes Court, chaired by Judge Anvar Seyidov, started hearings over the assassination of Academician Ziya Bunyadov Monday. A total of 7 people are facing charges. The key suspect is Nizami Aghayev, former employee of the Bina airport customs, son of the former Absheron district mayor.
The indictment says that the assassination was perpetrated by Azeri nationals, members of the Islamic terrorist organization “Hezbollah”. One of the convicted, Tariel Ramazanov, is still on the wanted list.
A renowned statesman, MP and Academician Ziya Bunyadov was gunned down on his doorstep on February 21, 1997.*
