 | Small rivers in appalling condition |
The research of small rivers throughout the republic has arrived at a conclusion that most of them are in a very bad condition. Untreated sewer drains and garbage is continuously dumped in the Davachichay, Gilgilchay, Gudiyalchay, Atachay, Velvelechay (on the territory of the Guba and Davachi provinces), as well as Ganjchay and Goshgarchay rivers. This inevitably undermines natural processes in the rivers and leads to their gradual destruction, says chairman of the national committee for international hydrological program of UNESCO Macbet Mammadov.
He said pollution of rivers represents the most serious obstacle in the way of solution of the acute drinking water problem.
A conference “Fresh water” is due at Baku State University soon, to be jointly organized by the National Committee and the University.*
